Ten persons,including seven women and two children,were killed and six others injured when a truck they were travelling in fell into a ditch on the Bagodara-Limbdi highway in Dhandhuka,about 100 km from Ahmedabad,in the early hours of Friday.
Police said the injured have been shifted to different hospitals.
The truck fell into a ditch on the wrong side of the road at Khdol village in a bid to overtake an auto-rickshaw,police said. There were 16 passengers who were going to Surat from Bhavnagar in the truck loaded with sacks of wheat,they added.
Most passengers died because of the heavy sacks that fell on them. We have sent the bodies for postmortem but it looks like the passengers were suffocated to death because of the sacks, said Dhandhuka police sub-inspector H V Pancholi.
According to Pancholi,the passengers,residents of Valdipur in Bhavnagar,were going to Surat for trading wheat grains.
One of the victims,Jasuben Rajubhai,28,was going back to Surat after celebrating her pregnancy at her fathers home in Valdipur,who was also killed in the accident.
The other deceased were identified as Jivuben Nanubhai (70),Valiben Gabrubhai (22), Chanuben Selabhai (3),Ajay Jamabhai (six months),Shantiben Gabrubhai (50),Laxmiben (65),Tiraben (50),Rayaben Ranchodbhai (32) and Hakabhai Merabhai (49).
