Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has called a meeting of Congress Legislative Party (CLP) for March 5 — the day of filing the nominations, ahead of the election for the one Rajya Sabha seat, according to a communication letter on Tuesday.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan told all the CLP members, “A meeting of the CLP has been fixed by the Chief Minister on March 5, 2026 at 11am in at Ruling Lounge, Vidhan Sabha, because nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat is to be filed by the Congress on this date. All members are requested to attend the meeting positively.”

Sukhu, who was in Delhi for the last two days, returned to Shimla Tuesday afternoon.

Party MLAs do not want an ‘outsider’

Sources said, “Sukhu interacted with the senior party leaders on the issue of party candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls.”

The sources also said Sukhu conveyed to the high command — who will decide the candidate’s name — that the party MLAs want a candidate from the state instead of an outsider.

Chauhan told the media, “All the Congress MLAs are committed to the party. Whoever will be the candidate, all of our MLAs will support him.”

So far, the Congress has not declared the name of party candidate for the Rajya Sabha election. The party is in the full majority with 40 members out of 68 in the Vidhan Sabha. The main opposition BJP has 28 members in the House and has also not declared its candidate.

One of the Rajya Sabha seats out of three from Himachal is going to be vacant as the six-year tenure of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Indu Bala Goswami ends on April 9. The election for the seat will be held on March 16.

As per the schedule issued by the Election Commission of India on February 19, the last date for filing nominations has been fixed as March 5. The candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 9. The voting will take place on March 16 and votes counting will commence at 5.00 PM the same day.

Besides Indu Goswami, the state is represented in the Upper House by Sikander Kumar and Harsh Mahajan. Sikander’s tenure is scheduled to conclude on April 2, 2028, while Harsh’s term will continue until April 2, 2030.

The last Rajya Sabha election in the state, held in 2024, had drawn significant political attention. Cross-voting by Congress MLAs had resulted in the defeat of Congress nominee Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The BJP’s Harsh Mahajan emerged victorious in that contest.
