A slight dip in the maximum temperature — from the season’s highest of 43.8°C to 41.9°C brought little comfort to Tricity residents, who continued to battle oppressive heat and rising humidity. The weather on Wednesday remained harsh, with the city recording its first ‘warm night’ of the season as the minimum temperature touched 31.7°C, five degrees above normal. Despite the easing of peak daytime heat, humidity levels surged to 54 per cent making conditions uncomfortable throughout the day.

According to the India Meteorological Department, warm nights and heatwave conditions are expected to persist till June 14, with night temperatures hovering around 30°C to 31°C.
An official of Meteorological Department said that a possible change in weather is anticipated around June 15 and 16, with a chance of thunderstorms or rainfall likely to offer some respite from the ongoing heatwave.

The Health Department, Chandigarh, in an advisory for the public, says drink sufficient water at frequent intervals, even if you are not thirsty, and also include lemon water, lassi, coconut water etc. Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content, like watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, orange, lettuce etc. Avoid direct exposure to the sun, and stay indoors in well-ventilated and cool places, and wear thin, loose, cotton garments, preferably light-coloured. Cover your head, avoid getting out in the sun unless necessary, and also strenuous activities when outside in the afternoon. Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks or drinks with a large amount of sugar, as these lead to loss of more body fluids or may cause stomach cramps, and do not eat stale food.
