Despite a stepped up drive by the traffic police against drunken driving, officials records show that it seems to have little or no salutary effect on drunken brawls. And in some incidents, police personnel are also at the receiving end. As per the official records, about 249 complaints of brawls were received at police control room in the last three months. Most of the complaints about brawls were received from sub-urban areas of Chandigarh, which are located on the periphery of Chandigarh.
These areas include Palsora, Sector 56, Kajheri, Sector 61, Burail, Sector 45, Hallomajra Sector 31 and Manimajra. Coincidentally, the presence of liquor vends and taverns is very high in these areas comparatively to other parts of Chandigarh.
A police officer attached with police control room said, “There is a specific time, when complaints of drunken brawls are received at the police control room. Generally, these complaints are received from 5 pm to 2 am.” A police officer said, “Repeated drives are being launched against people who drink at public places. So far, more than 800 people have been arrested under Excise Act for drinking alcohol at public places in the last nine months. Moreover, a strict drive is also being conducted against the people who consume alcohol while sitting in vehicles at parking lots.”
