August 31 India needs to become a country of investors rather than of savers or traders, SEBI Whole Time Member Ashwani Bhatia said on Thursday.
“Country needs to become a country of investors and not savers or traders” Bhatia said during a panel discussion after the launch of a book – ‘Let’s Talk Mutual Funds’, authored by Monika Halan.
He said the wealth which has been created in the mutual fund industry is doubling every five years. The asset under management (AUM) of the mutual fund industry has shown a remarkable jump from Rs 8 lakh crore in 2013 to Rs 46 lakh crore currently.
According to him, as the mutual fund industry becomes safer and as the distribution relatively becomes better, the confidence of the people will increase.
He said the know your customer (KYC) norms in the securities market is much more robust compared to the banking system.
Bhatia also said that all the regulators are in discussion to launch a central KYC platform.
