Domestic markets plunged on Wednesday amid heavy sell off and amid weak overseas sentiment over talks on the US debt ceiling limit. BSE benchmark Sensex closed 371.83 points, or 0.60 per cent down at 61,560.64, while, broader NSE Nifty50 shed 104.75 points, or 0.57 per cent to settle at 18,181.75.
In the intraday session, Sensex fell as much as 541.05 points, or 0.88 per cent to touch an intraday low of 61,391.42, while, Nifty50 touched 18,115.35.
Kotak Mahindra and Apollo Hospitals were the top losers today, as the former tanked 1.95 per cent, and Apollo fell 1.74 per cent. SBI Life, TCS, HCLTech, Asian Paints, Infosys, Tata Steel, Wipro, and Tata Motors were the top losing stocks today.
On the other hand, Hero MotoCorp, ITC, IndusInd Bank, UPL, Bharti Airtel, Maruti Suzuki, UltraTech Cement, M&M and SBI were the top gaining stocks today.
Bharti Airtel soared 0.68 per cent today after the telco major posted around a 50 per cent rise in its consolidated net profit in the March quarter to Rs 3,006 crore.

Broader markets largely ended in negative, as Nifty 100 fell 0.58 per cent, Nifty Next 50 fell 0.56 per cent, and Nifty 200 plunged 0.52 per cent.
Meanwhile, Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.53 per cent, and Nifty Smallcap 250 climbed 0.43 per cent.
The rupee today fell 13 paise to close at 82.38 (provisional) against the US dollar.
