Indian frontline equity indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 soared to record highs on Thursday on the back of rally in key heavyweight stocks. NSE Nifty 50 breached the earlier level of 23,889.1 to hit a record high at 23,974.70 while Sensex crossed the 79,000 mark for the first time to hit a new lifetime high at 79,033.91.
After opening marginally lower, the Nifty 50 was up 0.32 per cent to 23,945 points as of 10:30 a.m. while the S&P BSE Sensex added 0.35 per cent to 78,948.25 points. The indexes had declined 0.2 per cent in the opening minutes of the session. In another key milestone, key heavyweight index, Bank Nifty, also breached the 53,000 mark for the first time.
Among Nifty sectoral indices, Auto, IT, PSU Bank, Pharma, Realty remained in red while Oil&Gas, Healthcare, Commodities, Infrastructure remained in green. Broader markets also participated in the rally. However, after the initial hour, the indices lost the gains to trade near flatline.
India’s top cement manufacturer by capacity Ultratech Cement jumped 4.3 per cent after the company said it would buy a 23 per cent stake in India Cements for $226 million, thus making it a top Nifty 50 gainer. The announcement led India Cements’ shares to surge 12 per cent.
The second-heaviest Nifty 50 stock, Reliance Industries, continued being a key driver of indices and rose 1.25 per cent. The Mukesh Ambani led company has rallied 4 per cent in the previous session.
