Digital Imaging Company Canon India on Wednesday launched an ultralight portable scanner,Formula P-201,for Rs 11,995 along with the introduction of CaptureOnTouch,a mobile application for scanning on the go.
The scanner and application together will help consumers to effectively scan the documents in variety of file formats like PDF,JPEG and so forth. Users can further share the scans through e-mail or archive in other applications.
Canon is targeting households,which have enormous personal hard copy documents like marksheets,loan agreement,insurance policies and sales representatives of insurance companies who digitize customer documents on-site. Besides this,the company is also looking to tap frequent travelers,SOHOs,MSME/SMEs,doctors,etc.
P-201 is capable of scanning variety of document sizes and paper densities like plain paper,postcard and business card. The scanner scans at a speed of 7.5 seconds per page with a 200 x 200 dpi result. It has contact image sensor and supports simplex scanning side. The scanner weighs 550 gms.
The CaptureOnTouch Mobile is a free application for smartphones and tablets that allows users to scan directly to iOS (iPad/iPhone) and Android devices. Users can also share documents easily by email or by uploading to their favourite cloud-based applications. The app is available on both Google Play and itunes.
Canon said it was eyeing Rs 100 crore business from scanning and digitisation services by next year,on the back of demand from households and insurance sector.
“The total scanner market in India is about 2.35 lakh units… its only Rs 200 crore industry. Canon does close to Rs 65 crore business this year and we are hopeful of Rs 100 crore sales from scanner and digitisation services next year,” Canon India Executive Vice President Alok Bharadwaj said.
He said the company has already got two orders from pharma industry for the digitisation services and it will be aiming for Rs 15 crore business from the segment next year.
As part of the managed digitisation services,the company is offering large enterprises an opportunity wherein all their hard copy records will be scanned and digitised.
Along with the scanner,Canon also introduced a mobile application for scanning on the go.

The company also announced that it will celebrate October 16 as ‘Digitisation Day’.
The scanner will be available across India after 16th October,2013 and will be sold on all Canon Image Square stores and retail outlets.
Canon has a market share of 25.1% with respect to unit shipment in high-speed document imaging scanner during the period H1 2013 (Jan-Jun 2013) and is ranked No 1 in the Sheetfed category during the period H1 2013 (Jan-Jun 2013) as per IDC release. (With PTI inputs)
