Tokyo shares down 2.34 pct

Japanese share prices fell 2.34 per cent in morning trade on Thursday,hit by disappointment over a lack of detail in Washington’s bank rescue plans,dealers said.

The Tokyo market,which was closed on Wednesday,was catching up with events in the United States,where shares plunged on Tuesday on worries that the new US administration lacks a clear strategy to fight the economic crisis.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange’s benchmark Nikkei-225 index fell 186.27 points,or 2.34 per cent,to 7,759.67 by the lunch break. The broader Topix index of all first-section shares lost 14.61 points,or 1.88 per cent,to 763.49.
