Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday inaugurated the phase-II production facility of luxury car manufacturer Mercedes Benz in Pune. Located in the Chakan area of Pune, phase II of the plant would allow the company to double its manufacturing capacity from 10,000 to 20,000 units per year, making it the largest capacity luxury car manufacturer in the country.

Eberhard Kern, CEO and Managing Director of Mercedes India, said the company would also start local manufacturing of GLA, the luxury compact SUV, at the Pune facility.

Launched nine months ago, Kern said, the GLA had been popular in the market with a long waiting period. “Local manufacturing of the GLA would help in reducing the waiting time,” he said.

With the commencement of phase II, the total investment made by the company now stands at Rs 1,000 crore.
