Petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Friday that the government will soon start direct benefit transfer (DBT) for public distribution of kerosene, a move that is expected to save around Rs 5,000 crore to the exchequer.
Speaking at the Delhi Economic Conclave, the minister said that the Jan Dhan- Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) has helped in significant oil sector reforms and his ministry is now working towards extending the same benefits to public distribution of kerosene. As such, the petroleum ministry is already firming up plans with state governments and identifying people who require kerosene subsidy.

According to government estimates, the direct cash transfers have yielded savings of over Rs 12,000 crore in 2014-15.
Further, the ministry is also considering restricting subsidised LPG to only poors.
“We might stop giving subsidised LPG to a certain economic class of people. Subsidy should only be for poor people,” Pradhan said while elaborating on the oil sector reforms.
According to the government some 40,10,607 people have given up their subsidy so far.
