Rs 79,398 crore Covid-loan: Govt gives two-year moratorium extension to Railways
According to the Budget documents for financial year 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Saturday, the repayment of the loan was to begin in financial year 2024-25 as the loan was provided with three years of moratorium only.
The special loan was provided by the Centre to the Railways contingent to certain repayment conditions linked to its performance metrics. The central government has extended the moratorium by two years for a special loan taken by the Ministry of Railways during the Covid-19 pandemic. The loan of Rs 79,398 crore, comprising Rs 63,000 crore as interest-free loan and Rs 16,398 crore bearing interest, was granted by the Centre to the Ministry of Railways in the financial year 2020-21.
According to the Budget documents for financial year 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Saturday, the repayment of the loan was to begin in financial year 2024-25 as the loan was provided with three years of moratorium only. However, as the Ministry of Railways was unable to repay the loan, the Ministry of Finance has extended the moratorium by another two years up to financial year 2025-26. The Railways will pay an interest of Rs 1,358 crore for FY25 and FY26.
