Lok Sabha members on Tuesday held a marathon eight-hour discussion on the Railway Budget. It began at 3.05 pm and continued till 11 pm. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu gave his reply to the discussion on Wednesday.
A total of 78 members from across party lines spoke after Tariq Anwar (NCP) opened the discussion soon after the House re-assembled post-lunch. In addition, over 30 members, who could not get time to speak, laid their speeches on the table.
It was well past 10.30 pm when Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, “Many members are speaking today… The Minister of State for Railways is sitting… Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is sitting… We are setting a very good tradition of democracy today.” Then he told P Venugopal (AIADMK), who was conducting the proceedings: “You have run the House for very long today… Amma will be very happy with you.” He concluded by saying, “I congratulate everybody.”
While BJP member Devendra Singh Bhole (Akbarpur) was in the midst of his speech, Rudy got up to point out to the chair, “It is the honourable member’s maiden speech. Honourable chair may make an observation.”
