The 17th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival concluded on Monday, after a five-day event which saw a plethora of authors, opinion-makers, artists, foreign delegates, translators, storytellers, publishers and performers come together at Hotel Clarks Amer in the Pink City.

“It’s been one of the most spectacular festivals ever. We had very few drawbacks… There have been no dramas, no controversies… The authors have been astonishingly good,” festival co-director William Dalrymple told The Indian Express.

This year witnessed over 250 speakers on a wide range of topics — fiction, history, politics, current affairs, gender, science, medicine, environment, climate justice, geopolitics, food, memory and cinema.

On free speech, which was the theme of the festival’s closing debate, Mohit Satyanand, chairperson of Teamwork Arts (producer of JLF) stated in a press release, “…without free speech, there would be no Jaipur Literature Festival. Free speech is very closely akin to freedom.”

A day earlier, Teamwork Arts and their long-time partner British Council entered a Memorandum of Understanding to bolster artistic collaboration between India and the United Kingdom. “This has been in the making for a while. We and the British Council have had an age-old relationship. We’re trying to make connections between what we are doing in different parts of the world and, of course, the British Council’s agenda,” said Roy.

Incidentally, the second edition of JLF Spain Valladolid, one of the recent international ventures of the festival, will take place from May 30 to June 3.
