Renault has launched the much-awaited Kwid hatchback in the country. Starting at an impressive price of just Rs 2.57 lakh and going up to Rs 3.53 lakh (both ex-showroom, New Delhi), the Renault Kwid is going all guns blazing against rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Alto and the Hyundai Eon. First showcased as a compact-crossover concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, the production version of the Renault Kwid looks entirely different, but is still true to its ‘crossover’ roots.
The Renault Kwid stands out from the crowd , thanks to its jacked-up ride-height and SUV-like exterior.
Design elements like short front- and rear-overhangs, butch front-end with large headlamps, big grille with Renault badging, squared off wheel arches, black-cladding all around, etc., give it a rugged appearance. Considering Indian consumers’ affinity towards high-riding cars these days, Renault’s design team seems to have hit the nail on the head with the Kwid at this price-point.
Inside, the Renault Kwid features a simple yet thoughtful layout. Highlights in the cabin include a three-spoke steering wheel, all-digital instrument cluster, two-gloveboxes, piano-black centre-console with integrated touch-screen infotainment system supporting navigation, A/C controls and trapezoidal A/C vents. In addition to that the Kwid also has a driver information display that shows fuel economy (average and instantaneous), average speed, fuel consumed, distance to empty etc.. It has a gear-shift-indicator, too.
The interior space is generous as compared to rivals in the segment. The Kwid measures 3,679mm in length, 1,579mm in width, 1,478mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,422mm. This translates into a lot of cabin space for passengers as well as luggage. Renault claims the Kwid has the best-in-segment 300-litre boot space while number of cubby holes all-around inside the cabin make the Kwid a very practical car. The Kwid boasts 180mm of ground clearance.
Powering the new ‘Kwid’ from the Renault family is a 799cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine developing 54PS of maximum power output and 72Nm of peak-torque. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and returns an ARAI-certified mileage of 25.17 km/l, making it the most fuel-efficient petrol car in the country.
Renault is also expected to bring a 1.0-litre petrol engine and AMT (automated manual transmission) equipped version of the Kwid in the coming time. The Kwid is being offered in six variants – STD, RXE, RXE (O), RXL, RXT and RXT (O), with five paint options – Fiery Red, Ice Cool White, Moonlight Silver, Outback Bronze and Planet Grey. Safety is optional as only the RXT (O) variant is offered with a driver airbag. That said, none of its competitors do any better in this area.
Considering its attractive looks, fuel efficiency, features and equipment and the practicality it will offer to an average Indian household, the Renault Kwid has all the
makings of a winner. Then, there’s its price-tag, which we think only sweetens the deal further!
The variant-wise prices of the Renault Kwid are as follows:
Kwid STD – Rs. 2.57 Lakh
Kwid RXE – Rs. 2.89 Lakh
Kwid RXE (O) – Rs. 2.95 Lakh
Kwid RXL – Rs. 3.12 Lakh
Kwid RXT – Rs. 3.44 Lakh
Kwid RXT (O) – Rs. 3.53 Lakh
All prices are ex-showroom Delhi.
