Swedish auto Volvo has introduced a petrol variant of its V40 Cross Country hatchback in India. Starting at a price of Rs. 27 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the new offering from Volvo now becomes the company’s most-affordable luxury car offered in the country. The new car comes badged as V40 Cross Country T4, and like its previously launched diesel version, it will also be sold as a top-end, fully-loaded variant.
Volvo has given the V40 Cross Country a sprightly petrol motor in the shape of the T4. The engine in it is a potent 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder, direct injection, turbocharged petrol unit that is Euro 5 compliant in European markets. It develops a maximum power output of 182.5PS @ 5,700rpm while peak torque of 240Nm comes into play between 1,600rpm and 5,000rpm. Power reserves from the engine are channeled via a six-speed automatic gearbox to the front wheels. Tipping the scale at 1485 kg, the T4 version will do 0-100km/h run in just 8.5 seconds.
Features wise, the T4 version of the hatchback is brimming with all the latest safety and convenience gadgets. Safety being Volvo’s forte, the newly introduced T4 variant comes with active bending bi-xenon head-lamps, whiplash protection, multiple airbags including driver’s knee airbag and dual-stage front airbags, the company’s City Safe technology, safety cage, anti-lock braking system, traction control, stability control, etc. Thanks to all of that, the Volvo V40 Cross Country T4 unsurprisingly gets with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
On the inside, the Volvo V40 Cross Country T4 can is available with either a single tone interior or a dual tone theme. Other bits like trademark floating centre console as well as a TFT infotainment screen with eight speakers are also present. The T4 variant is also equipped with a park-assist rear camera, start-stop function and engine brake energy regeneration system.
Uptill now, the V40 Cross Country was only available with a single variant in diesel trim, D3, priced at Rs. 33.25 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). With the introduction of a petrol T4 motor though, Volvo has not only made the V40 more affordable, but has also bridged the price-gap between it and its close rivals (BMW 1-Series, Mercedes A-Class) in India.
