The current Skoda Yeti is a very capable compact SUV. While it offers a great driving experience and quality laden interiors, the product couldn’t do well in India as it lacked the ego massaging size and road-presence that consumers wanted from a Rs 20 lakh SUV! However, with the new Yeti, Skoda hopes to revive the model’s sales in India by offering aggressive pricing and multiple versions. The new Yeti was showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo in Greater Noida and while a tentative launch was scheduled for this month, it seems the company has pushed the same to August or even September. Nonetheless, let’s take a closer look at what his new model is all about.
The new Yeti looks bolder than ever before. The face-lifted front end looks more radical and sportier than its predecessor. The chromed grille has vertical slats and the new rectangular headlamps bring optional bi-xenon and LED day time running lamps. The SUV also gets rugged looking silver skid plate on the front bumper and the company’s new logo now sits on the edge of the bonnet as compared to grille for the earlier model. The rear of the SUV has been well executed and features c-pattern wrap around tail lamps and twin exhausts along with a revamped tail gate. A silver skid plate is present here as well and the model also gets redesigned alloy wheels and new exterior color options.
On the feature list, the new Yeti might get a host of added gizmos including a new powerful music system, automatic parallel parking system and a rear-view camera. You also notice the new steering wheel, silver finish around the central console and the slightly updated infotainment system. The new Yeti is expected to come with the same diesel engine configuration which will come in two power outputs. The 110PS version will come with a front wheel drive system while the all-wheel drive model with get a more powerful 140PS engine.
There are also strong rumors on Skoda introducing the DSG transmission as well.
The current Yeti is priced Rs 15.18 lakh to 18.81 lakh and the newer model is expected to come with the same pricing as well. The Yeti offers a great combination of sedan like handling and comfort and the ability to tackle off-road adventures in a surprisingly good way. It is an under-estimated model in the Indian market but those who understand its capabilities will surely enjoy its limits as a customer.
