German luxury auto manufacturer Mercedes Benz on Friday announced the local production of its “top of the pyramid” super luxury vehicle Maybach S500. Eberhard Kern, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes Benz (India), said that the local production of the vehicle will start from October.
Priced at Rs 1.67 crore (ex-showroom Pune), the launch of Maybach S500 marked the unveiling of a new sub-brand of the company. Along with Maybach S500, the company also launched Maybach S600 imported from Germany, which is priced at Rs 2.60 crore.
Speaking about the decision to manufacture the vehicle locally, Kern said that India would be the first country in the world where the company would manufacture Maybach outside their plant in Germany.
The Maybach S500 would be the company’s eighth vehicle to be manufactured in India at its manufacturing unit in Chakan, Pune.
The gross localisation in its products is up to 60 per cent. Kern said the company would be launching three more vehicles in the remaining part of the calendar year.
Kern said the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai region has cornered 40 per cent of the market, which was different from countries like Taiwan and Russia, where two or three cities corner the whole market.
