Maruti Suzuki, the passenger car market leader, entered the fast growing compact SUV segment through Vitara Brezza at an introductory price of Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for its entry level diesel fuel variant.
While the the company has not yet launched the petrol variant of the car, the price range for the diesel variant is in the range of Rs 6.99 lakh and Rs 9.68 lakh.
MSIL’s pricing of the car is set to start a price war in the segment as the entry level diesel variants of two other cars in the segment— Ford Ecosport and Mahindra TUV 3OO are significantly higher. While the diesel variant of Ford Ecosport starts at Rs 8,18,900, the entry variant of TUV 3OO is priced at Rs 7,26,047.
“We didn’t have presence in one of the most key segments of the Indian market, that is the compact SUV. Vitara Brezza marks our entry into that segment,” said Kenichi Ayukawa MD & CEO, MSIL. The company opened the bookings on Tuesday and has said that the deliveries begin by the end of the month.
The segment has witnessed growth in volumes. While Ford sold 3,047 Ecosport’s in January 2016, M&M sold 3,816 units of its newly launched TUV 3OO in January. MSIL is targeting sales of up to 8,000 units in a month.
“We are targeting a monthly sale of around 5,000 initially but we expect it to grow to around 8,000 cars. I think we have the capacity to deliver the same and we will do the sales launch next month,” Ayukawa told The Indian Express earlier in an interview.
