The all-new i20 goes on sale in India with prices starting at Rs 4.90 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. This new model will be sold in five versions each of the petrol and diesel engine option. The launch event also marked a global premier for this new model as it will also be sold in various international markets very soon.
Hyundai has worked equally hard on the exteriors as well – there is simply no resemblance to the outgoing version in terms of design. The dual tone theme works well and everything looks and feels upmarket. The top end version gets a tech savvy Supervision instrumentation cluster which adds to the bling factor.
The central console is dominated by the audio system, the design of which seems to have been inspired by a certain German car manufacturer. We also love the way the beige fascia seems to wrap around the central air-vents. Equipment list also includes a rear camera with park assist, climate control system, front arm-rest, auto headlamps etc.
At the back, space is very generous and passengers also get a rear air-con vent. A central arm rest at the back is missing though. The new i20 has a substantial boot space of 285 litres.
On the engine front, the new i20 continues to be powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines. The bigger petrol motor has been discontinued which means an automatic transmission is not being offered any more. Both the petrol and diesel motors continue to put out the same power though we are told the diesel is better to drive now. However we will reserve our judgment till the next week after we drive the cars extensively.
The new i20 costs marginally more than the outgoing version. Petrol prices start at Rs 4,89,900 and the diesel range starts at Rs 6,09,900 and while these figures are a lot higher as compared to the say the Maruti Swift, considering the space, features and design on offer, the new i20 turns out to be a great buy in the segment.
