Maruti Suzuki’s automated manual transmission (AMT) equipped models have become and instant hit in the Indian automobile market. The automated manual transmission used by Maruti Suzuki is in essence the same five-speed manual transmission that is fitted to all it’s cars. But in automated form, it uses a different clutch mechanism along with clever electronics to make the unit operate as an automatic gearbox, featuring tiptronic function. This has kept costs in check and the automatic versions of the Celerio cost approximately Rs. 40,000 more than the manual models.

At times, over 50 per cent of bookings for India’s first AMT equipped car, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio have been accounted for by the automatic version since it’s launch in January 2014.

Maruti Suzuki recently launched the new Alto K10 that too comes with the option of the automated manual transmission. With the launch of the car, Maruti Suzuki is working with Magneti Marelli (supplier of the AMT unit) to increase supply of the automated manual transmission units from 3,500 units a month of 5,000 units in order to cater to market demand.

Now, with the news of the AMT equipped WagonR Stingray on the cards, supply will further have to be scaled up.

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR Stingray is the higher spec model of the popular WagonR hatchback. With this move, Maruti will be looking to launch a well equipped version of a car with AMT as AMT variants of the Celerio and Alto K10 are not top-end variants. In VXi (O) spec, the WagonR Stingray comes fitted with all bells and whistles of the top-end WagonR plus alloy wheels and safety features such as front airbags and anti-lock brakes.
