Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India has started setting up its new manufacturing plant in Vithalapur, Gujarat. The plant, which is situated 80 Km away from Ahmedabad, is the company’s fourth manufacturing facility in the country. The plant will be set up inside a campus that will be spread over an area of 250 acres, will have a total capacity of producing 12 lakh units per annum, will be dedicated to manufacturing only scooters and is expected to be up and running by the end of 2015. Once operational, the Vithalapur facility will be the largest scooter-only manufacturing plant in the world.
The facility’s foundation stone laying ceremony was graced by Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister of Gujarat and Saurabh Patel, Finance Minister, Government of Gujarat. They were accompanied by Noriaki Abe, Chief Operating Officer, Honda Motor Company Ltd. Asia & Oceania Region, Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, Managing Officer, Honda Motor Co. Ltd, Keita Muramatsu, President & CEO, HMSI, Harbhajan Singh Vice President, General & Corporate Affairs, HMSI and Yadvinder S. Guleria, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, HMSI.
“I would like to thank the Gujarat Government for their support in setting up the plant. With the fourth plant, we aim to reach closer to the vast market in West which contributes over 25 per cent to Honda business. The new plant will employ approximately 3000 people within first 2 years of commercial production and will entail INR 1,100 crore investment. Honda’s fourth plant 1.2 million units annual production capacity and increase our overall production capacity to 5.8 million units,” said Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, Managing Officer, Honda Motor.
Noriaki Abe, Chief Operating Officer, Honda Motor Company Ltd- Asia & Oceania Region, added, “As the World’s biggest two-wheeler market, India is already a priority market for Honda. In the current fiscal 2014-15, Honda aims to sell 18.2 million two-wheelers worldwide and for the first time, India will contribute almost 25 per cent to global Honda sales. We have huge expectations from this project as this will be our flagship and benchmark plant in India in terms of volume, safety, quality, cost, associate skill and moral.”
Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India currently has three manufacturing plants, one each in Karnataka, Haryana and Rajasthan. The plant in Karanataka was inaugurated in May 2013 and has the capacity to roll out 18 lakh units a year, the plant in Haryana can produce 16 lakh units and the Rajasthan plant 12 lakh units. Honda’s total production capacity will increase to 58 lakh units per annum once the Vithalapur plant is fully running.
