Globally, IIM-B has not only jumped 25 places as compared to last year but also is the only Indian institute in the top 50 globally. In the region-wise ranking, three Indian institutes made it to top 20. While IIM-B was ranked 9. Both IIM-Kozhikode and ISB were in the 15+ band.

This year, the best performance by India was given by IIT-Guwahati, which was ranked in the band of 61-70 among younger universities and a global rank of 470 overall. It is the 7th best university in India, as per the NIRF ranking released by the government of India.

The 2020 ranking includes 414 universities, up from 351 in 2019. As many as two universities made it into the top 100, while none could enter the '50 under 50' category.

IITs blame the high weightage given to 'perspective' metrics, which they claim lack transparency. The HRD Minister also said that he does not agree with international rankings and will instead focus on making Indian ranking a dream for international institutes.

The annual ranking by the Ministry of HRD has put IITs, IISc among top-ranking institutes and are promoting these institutes as the hubs for 'Study in India'. However, the institutes have failed to perform in global rankings this year including both THE and QS rankings.

Overall, 21 Indian universities and institutes have found a place this year among the world’s top 1,000, as opposed to 25 last year. IIT-Bombay retains its status as country's top university, followed by IISc-Bangalore.

In the latest THE University Rankings for Asia, eight institutes placed in the top 100 best institutes in Asia. This is India’s best performance since 2016, in terms of the number of institutes. Last time, India had eight institutes in the top 100 in 2016.
