The Delhi government has also been asked to "exhort traders and logistic providers to increase the supply of tomatoes to the mandis to ensure immediate control of price rise," the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

The price drop comes at a time when kharif plantations in the Nashik region have grown by over 20 per cent. Last year, growers had received good prices for their produce, which had fuelled the growth.

Tomato prices in metros were ruling at Rs 95/kg in Kolkata, Rs 92/kg in Delhi, Rs 80/kg in Mumbai and Rs 55/kg in Chennai on June 29, as per the ministry data. The rates in producing centres have also gone up sharply. The prices vary depending on the variety and quality.

In just over a month, retail prices of tomato have gone from about Rs 20 per kg to Rs 70 per kg (all-India modal average as per Department of Consumer Affairs data), after staying at Rs 10-12/kg through May and early June. Why has this happened?

Normally, prices of tomato firm up in the off-season of June-September every year, but the sharp increase in rates this time was mainly due to the damage caused to the rabi crop because of severe drought.

At Mother Dairy's Safal outlets, tomatoes are being sold at Rs 56 per kg, but the local vendors are charging anything between Rs 70-80 per kg.
