Madhya Pradesh saw widespread protests by upper caste groups after the SC/ST Act was amended to override a Supreme Court ruling. The issue found traction in the poll-bound state because government employees were unhappy with the state government’s policy of reservation in promotions.
The allocation for the welfare of OBCs has been hiked by 41.03 per cent - from Rs 1,237.30 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 1,747 crore in 2018-19, said Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot.
"The recommendation of National Commission for Backward Classes has been received on February 8. The Government is examining the matter of a mechanism for affirmative action for the OBCs," Gehlot said.
