"The pair trawling is used to net huge quantity of fish in a single catch by tying the net to two boats and had been banned for nearly two decades as it caused immense damage to fish wealth part of the larger marine ecology," a senior fisheries official said in Chennai.
The fishermen from Tamil Nadu stranded in Iran, "are neither allowed to return to India nor allowed to continue fishing for which they were engaged as contract fishing labourers," he said in a letter to the Prime Minister.
The fishermen from Nagapattinam district were arrested for allegedly fishing close to the island nation's waters and taken to Karainagar along with their boat, Deputy Director of Fisheries - Karaikal, Perumal Pillai said.
Fishermen from Pudukottai Ramanathapuram districts of Tami Nadu were apprehended by Sri Lankan Navy when they were fishing in Lankan waters. Tamil Nadu fishermen say that they should be allowed to fish in traditional waters of Palk Straits.
''It is reported that four fishermen from Jegathapattinam fishing base in Pudukottai district along with their mechanised boats were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy yesterday," Palaniswami said in the letter.
