Thombare and other private millers had initially estimated 108 lakh tonnes of sugar production, which has now been revised to 102 lakh tonnes. “This is mainly due to lower than expected yield, especially in Solapur and Ahmednagar,” he said.

Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has projected the sugar output to increase by 13 per cent to 310 lakh tonnes in the 2020-21 marketing year on likely higher availability of sugarcane as against 274.2 lakh tonnes last year.

The country's sugar output has reached 27.02 million tonnes (MT) so far in the ongoing 2019-20 season (October-September). About 1,50,000 tonnes of sugar production is expected by season-end, taking total output to 27.2 MT for this season, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement.

Already, about 17 million tonnes of sugar has been manufactured by mills till February 15. Annual sugar consumption in India, the world's second largest producer after Brazil, is about 26 million tonnes.

The trade body also estimates more than 800,000 tonnes of sugar cane production will be diverted to ethanol in the 2019-20 season. This an increase of over the 500,000 tonnes from the previous season.
