Soyabean prices have seen an exceptional increase over the last few months. The oilseed, which is grown extensively in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra among other states, has traded well above its government-declared Minimum Support Price of Rs 3,880 per quintal.

Earlier this month, agriculture officers from Indore and Ujjain had issued letters stopping the movement and sale of soyabean seed outside their jurisdiction. This decision was taken due to the possible crunch to be faced in the supply of seed in the upcoming kharif season.

The Agriculture department has recommended that farmers identify the best of their crop and re-use them as seeds for three continuous years, before buying new ones. Prior to sowing, the seeds should be treated to avoid germination failure.
