In the eastern sector, as reported by The Indian Express, Army units in Sikkim have already been staged forward as they undertake their Operational Alert this month which has been advanced from October. No movement of troops has, however, taken place in Ladakh, the other major area where India and China share a disputed border.

Doklam standoff: PLA soldiers pitch 80 tents; Army advances exercise for units in Sikkim. The Indian Express has learnt that the number of Chinese troops in the area is estimated to be less than 800, which means that it is not a full PLA infantry battalion.

China's top diplomat on the boundary issue, Wang Wenli, told a visiting Indian media delegation that Bhutan has conveyed to Beijing through the diplomatic channels that the area of the standoff is not its territory.

"There is one area in Barahoti where carrying of weapons is prohibited for Indian as well as Chinese soldiers. There are instances of Indian soldiers going into their territory and Chinese soldiers coming into our territory," Chief Minister Trivendra Singh said.

The NSA reached Beijing on Wednesday to attend a two-day BRICS security summit. "To resolve this issue, the Indian border troops must withdraw without further ado, as Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. That would be the precondition and basis for any meaningful dialogue," said Lu.
