ABOUT shabana azmi

Shabana Azmi: A Legacy in Indian Cinema Shabana Azmi, born September 18, 1950, stands as a towering figure in Indian cinema, with a career spanning over 160 films. Her contributions extend beyond mainstream Bollywood, encompassing independent and neorealist parallel cinema, and even international projects. A recipient of five National Film Awards for Best Actress—a record—and six Filmfare Awards, Azmi's accolades also include the Padma Shri (1998) and Padma Bhushan (2012). A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Azmi's debut in Ankur (1974) launched her as a leading actress of parallel cinema, a movement characterized by realistic portrayals of Indian society and often imbued with social reformist themes. Her roles frequently challenged conventional depictions of women, showcasing complex and unconventional characters across diverse genres. Beyond her cinematic achievements, Azmi is a prominent social and women's rights activist and a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Population Fund. Her contributions to public life led to a nominated Rajya Sabha membership. Married to lyricist Javed Akhtar, Azmi's legacy is defined not only by her remarkable acting prowess but also by her unwavering commitment to social justice and her influential presence in Indian public discourse. Her iconic roles, consistently portraying strong and complex women, cemented her position as one of India's most acclaimed and respected actresses.
