Justice Anu Malhotra directed the Delhi Police Crime Branch, in whose custody Chawla was remanded in Thursday, to lodge him at the Tihar jail “in terms of the said Letters of Assurance of the Ministry of Home Affairs... till further direction of this court”.

The court order to sent Chawla to Tihar jail was delivered after his counsel told the court that during his extradition, the Union Home Ministry had assured the United Kingdom government that he would be kept in Tihar jail to face trial.

Sanjeev Chawla, a key conspirator in the match-fixing case, managed to flee from India to the UK in 2000. His Indian passport was revoked that year, and he obtained a British passport in 2005.
