On Friday, a holiday to celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary, 39,599 passengers availed the ATAL services with 23,942 travelling in terminal feeder service and 15,658 in core city services. Revenue collected stood at Rs 1.97 lakh.

The women pooled in resources to buy 44 buses and leased them to the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML). The buses are all set to ply on city roads from this Sunday.

The demand for starting the bus service was made by Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials posted at Pune airport, citing parking issues due to the increasingly large number of private vehicles coming to the airport every day.

In the standard operating procedure (SOP) declared for restarting the bus service, which has been halted for five months, Managing Director Rajendra Jagtap said each PMPML bus will ply with half its passenger capacity -- 20 passengers, 17 sitting and three standing -- at a time.

The passengers will be seated in a zig-zag manner as per seat markings and there won’t be any standing passengers.

PMPML, which ran 1,600 buses daily till the lockdown, only runs 100-120 buses daily now. These buses ferry employees who are involved in providing essential services like civic staff, government staff, police personnel and hospital staff.

In recent weeks, the PMPML has stepped up efforts to increase revenue generation by taking steps such as marking a ‘Bus Day’ every month, trying to push sale of passes and bring down cancellations.
