With today's development, former Sikkim chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling's SDF is left only with 5 MLAs in the 32-member Assembly. In the recently held Assembly elections, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) won 17 seats while the SDF won 15 seats.

The SKM, founded in 2013, won a slender majority in the 32-member Sikkim Legislative Assembly by bagging 17 seats against 15 won by the SDF.

Chamling has been corresponding with the President, Prime Minister and other union ministers to press for inclusion of Gurung, Mangar, Rai, Sunwar, Mukhia, Jogi, Thami, Yakha, Bahun, Chettri and Newar in the ST list.

"We are also coming up with our own state university," Chamling said. "The purpose of education should be to become good human beings for which the students must change their mindset," he added.

In a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Chamling said that the “creation of Gorkhaland state will also restore permanent peace and prosperity in the region”. Chamling on Thursday posted a copy of the letter on his Facebook page.
