The benchmark Nikkei average slipped 0.1 per cent to 19,326.78 by the midday break, despite overnight gains on Wall Street, as investors locked in some recent gains.

The Nikkei average gained 0.5% to 16,633.46 by the midday break, not far though from a 3-1/2-year low of 16,378.94 touched last Tuesday. Earlier in the session, the index rose as much as 1.7%.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan ticked up 0.3 per cent, led by gains in Hong Kong and South Korea. On the week, the pan-regional index was up 1.94 per cent.

The Nikkei share average ticked down 0.20% to 23,782.87 while the broader Topix lost 0.39% to 1,721.42, with 34 shares declining for every 10 gainers. Nissan Motor fell 3.1% to a low last seen in September 2011 after Jun Seki, its vice chief operating officer and a former contender for CEO, said he was leaving the firm to become the president of Nidec Corp.

The seasonally-adjusted Nikkei India Services Business Activity Index, published by IHS Markit, hit 50.2 in May, against 51 in April. A reading above 50 suggests expansion, while below it signals contraction.

At the midday break, Japan's Nikkei share average was down 1.7 percent at 20,631.43 after going as low as 20,598.86, its weakest since March 26.
