Karnataka slow-pedalling on giving nod to MM Hills tiger reserve, political gains doubted

Despite permission from National Tiger Conservation Authority, Karnataka has cited the presence of temple in MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary as a barrier to making it a tiger reserve. Activists allege that politicians are eying several projects, including small hydel projects, inside the sanctuary.

Chief wildlife warden Vijaykumar Gogi said Karnataka has among the highest number of tigers in the country and most of the deaths reported were due to old age or territorial fights.
