The large explosion shook the centre of Mogadishu and a large plume of smoke rose above the scene of the blast, a building that houses Somalia's ministries of labour and works.

Security ministry spokesman Ahmed Mohamud said five civilians were killed and ten others wounded in the car bomb blast. "It occurred in front of business shops along the road," he told reporters.

"We are in control of the hotel but it was mostly destroyed by the suicide bomber," Abdi Bashir told Reuters. Five of the gunmen were killed, Bashir said. Al Shabaab, the Islamist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack.
