Maulana Abul Kalam Azad served as the first education minister of independent India from 1947 to 1958. He was posthumously honoured with India’s highest civilian award - Bharat Ratna in 1992.

National Education Day 2019: The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) on September 11, 2008 announced, "The Ministry has decided to commemorate the birthday of this great son of India by recalling his contribution to the cause of education in India."

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad always emphasised on quality education and considered schools as laboratories which produced future citizens of the country. He strongly believed in free primary education and compulsory education to all children upto the age of 14.
