The Mahanadi row with Chhattisgarh has escalated and pressure has been mounting on the state BJP to speak out — the BJD and Congress have maintained that the damming of the Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh will choke water supply to Odisha.
Asserting that Odisha is committed to save the Mahanadi, Patnaik said a "Green Mahanadi" drive has been launched in order to undertake plantation of lakhs of trees on both sides of the river for its safeguard.
The dispute has allowed the Naveen Patnaik government to use the issue against the BJP. It will raise the 'misuse' of Mahanadi waters by the BJP-led Chhattisgarh government while campaigning for the February 24 bypoll in Bijepur Assembly seat.
The apex court, however, refused to grant any stay as sought by Odisha government on the seven pick up weirs (small dams) across the Mahanadi river, which flows through Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha before pouring into the Bay of Bengal
BJD's B Mahtab claimed that the Speaker should not have said that his party was politicising the issue. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said she never made such remarks and such allegations should not be levelled against her.
