Maha Kumbh Mela 2025

Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Prayagraj is hosting the Maha Kumbh this year, also known as the Poorna Kumbh, which takes place every 12 years. The Mahakumbh began on January 13, 2025, with the Paush Purnima Snan, and will conclude on February 26, 2025, aligning with Maha Shivratri. The Kumbh Mela has various myths and stories surrounding its origins, with some tracing it back to mentions in ancient texts like the Vedas and Puranas, while others believe it began only a couple of centuries ago. What is undeniable, however, is that it has grown into one of the largest gatherings of pilgrims in the world. Some participants come for a single ritual bath in the sacred river, believed to cleanse their sins. Others, known as kalpwasis, stay along the riverbanks for an extended period, seeking spiritual growth and relief from the pressures of material life. Many attendees also offer daan (donations) in different forms during the event. With such a vast crowd, the Kumbh Mela has historically been an important center of commerce for local communities. There are even historical records of Venetian coins and European toys being found in the markets of the Mela.
