The Madras High Court quashed a single bench ruling that upheld the takeover, saying the department had merely stated that the Ayodhya Mandapam was a public place of worship as per Section 6 (20) of the HR and CE Act but failed to consider the Samaj’s objectives and to specify the allegations against it.

In her plea before the court, Manikandan’s mother Ramalakshmi claimed that her son died as a result of brutal police torture. She said the post-mortem was not conducted properly and sought a fresh one. Further, the petitioner claimed that the police released only two minutes of CCTV footage of the enquiry.
