The rates of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) were cut by Rs 53, wiping away a third of the record Rs 144.50 per cylinder price hike effected last month, according to a price notification issued by state-owned oil firms.

LPG price hike: Generally, the prices of LPG cylinders are revised on a monthly basis by the oil marketing companies (OMCs). The previous price revision was done on January 1, 2020.

Price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), used to power aeroplanes, was raised by Rs 1,637.25 per kilolitre, or 2.6 per cent, to Rs 64,323.76 per kl in Delhi, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

Under new rates, the cooking gas will cost Rs 637 per cylinder from July 1 as against Rs 737.50 previously. Subsidised cooking gas price will be Rs 494.35 per cylinder.

This is the steepest increase in domestic subsidised LPG rate since June 25, 2011, a hike of Rs 50 per cylinder, which was necessitated due to a jump in international oil prices. Every household is entitled to 12 cylinders of 14.2-kg each at subsidised rates in a year. Any requirement beyond that has to be purchased at market price.

The GST came into force on July 1. LPG has been put in the five per cent GST slab. Earlier a two to four per cent VAT was imposed on LPG in some states. Maken accused the government of not passing on the benefits of drop in global crude oil prices to people of the country.

This is the fifth straight reduction in rates of non-subsidised or market priced LPG.
