As against 24.08 crore bulk litres (bl) consumed in April-June 2019, the consumption was barely 9.89 crore bl this year. Senior excise officials and industry players indicate the recovery to 2019 consumption level may take a while.

Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had allowed the online sale of liquor through home delivery in Mumbai from May 23. The service was to be allowed from 10 am to 6 pm.

The WBSBCL, the only wholesaler of liquor in the state, has already introduced e-retail and home delivery by enlisted off-shops to ensure social distancing and minimising footfall at outlets during the lockdown.
