India on Thursday indefinitely suspended cross-LoC trade at two points along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir effective Friday, following reports that it was being "misused" by elements from across the border to smuggle weapons, narcotics and fake currency.
Three people -- a BSF officer, a woman and a five-year-old girl -- were killed and 24 others, including five security personnel, were injured Monday when Pakistan pounded dozens of villages with mortars in different sectors of Poonch district.
The Pakistani troops were even targetting the civilian areas, sources said. The mortar shelling was so intense that the explosions caused by mortar shells were audible even in Mendhar town, they added.
While in adjoining Rajouri district’s Nowshera sector, Pakistani troops have been resorting to mortar shelling and small arms fire for past many days, the ceasefire violation in Akhnoor sector came after nearly three months.
The incident comes at a time when bilateral relations have hit a low, with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj launching a scathing attack on Pakistan during her speech to the UN General Assembly Saturday.
