According to the preliminary probe report submitted by the police and the state fire department at the meeting, sprinklers inside the building were lying defunct. Despite housing hundreds of shops, the building had no ventilation.
Eight persons fell sick after inhaling smoke. They were all released from a state run hospital after preliminary treatment, a hospital source said. Ten fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire which broke out at 12, Pretoria Street building.
An early morning fire at the Kolkata Medical College and Hospital has been brought under control. Ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot and at least 250 people evacuated. But no casualties have been reported.
