Last month, the Kerala HC had banned flash hartals, making it mandatory for any organisation, political or otherwise, to issue a notice for a bandh at least seven days in advance. In that regard, today's bandh call was contempt of the court, the bench chaired by chief justice Hrishikesh Roy noted.
The order comes days after the Sabarimala Karma Samithi, an umbrella organisation of right-wing outfits led by the RSS, gave the call for a state-wide bandh on January 3 protesting against the entry of young women at the Sabarimala shrine.
Kerala Sabarimala Hartal Today: The Bhartiya Janata Party extended its support to the hartal, while the state Congress also joined the protests and announced that it would observe Thursday as a "black day".
Kerala Travel Mart (KTM), which convened a meeting of 28 organisations operating in the tourism industry, said the stakeholders in the industry would take necessary action to ensure hassle-free operation of the tourism sector during shutdowns called by political parties in future.
