The government plans to increase the participation of long-term foreign pension funds in the equity market as it looks to curb volatility due to short-term FII investment. A beginning is likely to be made in the forthcoming issues of public-sector undertakings under the government’s disinvestment programme. Investment bankers will be given the mandate to fill a certain percentage of institutional quota with long-term pension funds. The idea is to ensure that this quota is used up predominantly by pension funds which are less volatile compared to FIIs and hedge funds,a top government source said.
