Temperatures breaching 44 degrees Celsius across India have forced states into action. From Jharkhand to Odisha, school timings are being slashed, start times pushed to 7 am. Across the country, the school day is being changed by the heatwave.

The directive applies to all government, government-aided and unaided recognised private schools under the Directorate of Education, as well as schools run by the NDMC, MCD and the Delhi Cantonment Board.

The second highest number of such schools was in Telangana (2,245), followed by Madhya Pradesh (463). While Telangana had 1,016 teachers employed in these schools, Madhya Pradesh employed 223.
