Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has allocated Rs 1.70 lakh crore for fertiliser subsidy for 2026-27, up from Rs 1.67 lakh crore in the past fiscal.

The fertiliser subsidy is the second-largest item in the Union budget, next only to the food subsidy — its allocation is more than the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare allocation of Rs 1.37 lakh crore in FY26.

The rupee's weakening is a wake-up call for the government. An overvalued rupee made it easier for the government to keep prices of imported fertilisers and fuel artificially low for farmers/consumers and for firms to borrow cheaply in dollars without protecting against exchange risk
