To increase the blending percentage of ethanol in petrol and thus reduce the import burden on the country, the central government has been pushing for the production of ethanol. Sugar mills are encouraged to produce ethanol, by diverting their juice towards production of ethanol.

Abinash Verma, director general of Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) — the apex body of private sugar millers in the country — said they have predicted a dip of 15 lakh tonnes of sugar for production of ethanol.

As part of an incentive scheme announced in June 2018, the Centre had approved soft loans for mills to set up new distilleries or upgrade existing ones, expand capacity, and encourage them to divert sugarcane to ethanol making.
