With some initial resistance, Lutyens agreed and travelled to various cities, studying stupas, temples, mosques, and tombs, and incorporated them with the Beaux-Arts-inspired axial, symmetric layout — creating the “Delhi Order”, and in the process, inventing a new stylistic and climatic solution.

The word ‘Lutyens’ has been synonymous with central Delhi elitism and has often been invoked by the PM and the BJP to target Anglicised elites. However, the move to replace his statue with that of Rajaji may not have much political impact since the latter is no longer a prominent figure in his home state, Tamil Nadu.

Nobody could satisfactorily explain the presence of the monkeys in the building, nor of the countless files. The sun will soon set on these buildings as they move deeper into the recesses of history

Once considered a landmark, the legendary building in Delhi’s Connaught Place has not been able to sustain itself post the closing down of the eponymous theatre – literally as well as metaphorically.
